Sarah Anne’s Online Book Club: February Book Announcement 3

The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore

Do you enjoy talking to people about what you read? If so, I’m glad you found this page. I’m starting a monthly online book club with questions posted twice a month for people to discuss.

February’s book is going to be The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore. I have not read this book yet – I will be reading it along with you. I saw this book advertised in Bookpages (a monthly book review magazine that I pick up at my local library). It is set during the times when electricity starts becoming commonplace.

Here is the Goodreads description:

New York, 1888. Gas lamps still flicker in the city streets, but the miracle of electric light is in its infancy. The person who controls the means to turn night into day will make history—and a vast fortune. A young untested lawyer named Paul Cravath, fresh out of Columbia Law School, takes a case that seems impossible to win. Paul’s client, George Westinghouse, has been sued by Thomas Edison over a billion-dollar question: Who invented the light bulb and holds the right to power the country?

In obsessive pursuit of victory, Paul crosses paths with Nikola Tesla, an eccentric, brilliant inventor who may hold the key to defeating Edison, and with Agnes Huntington, a beautiful opera singer who proves to be a flawless performer on stage and off. As Paul takes greater and greater risks, he’ll find that everyone in his path is playing their own game, and no one is quite who they seem.

We will not start the discussion of the book until Wednesday, Feb. 8, for the first half of the book (chapters 1-36) and then a discussion of the whole book on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

March’s book will be announced early in February.

Comment below if you plan on joining us or if you’ve read the book before and what you thought of it! Looking forward to this online book club!
