“Maybe the hardest part of life is just having the courage to try.”
Landon Brinkley is set on becoming one of the best party planners in LA, so she leaves her home and family in Texas to start her own life in California. She has an internship working for the most famous planner – Selah, where she hopes to learn all the tricks of the trade and work her way up the ladder. She quickly finds that Selah is not a nice person and the hours of the internship are very long and thankless. She finds help in two friends – her roommate and a coworker. However, as she spends more time close to Selah, she begins to change and it might not be for the better.
After I read Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis, I added her Party Girl book series to my to-read list. She mentions how she wrote the first book and no publisher would print it, so she self-published the book and it did very well. There are three books in the series. Party Girl was on sale as an ebook one day, so I bought it and read it shortly thereafter.
Landon finds herself hired as Selah’s personal assistant after the old one gets fired. Landon starts to see Selah’s true colors and fears being on Selah’s bad side. However, when Selah finally asks Landon to do something that would cross a line for her morally, Landon has to decide quickly who she really wants to be – the girl from Texas who wants to plan parties or a ruthless, but famous, party planner from LA. Along the way, she learns about friendship and love.
I enjoyed reading Party Girl and it would make a good fun or vacation read. Fans of The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Wiesbarger will see a similar plot in Party Girl. There’s a good balance in the book of the main character being a “good girl” with moral standards but not being fake or perfect. Landon was raised going to church, but also loves Jack Daniels when she heads to a bar with friends.
