“Life was all about consequences.”
It was just a simple, friendly backyard barbecue – but no one walked away the same. The hosts, Vid and Tiffany, shared secrets with their guests while their daughter watches the two little girls who are over. The girls’ parents, Sam and Clementine, are in the midst of the hard time of being parents of little children and not having much time for themselves. The other couple, Erika and Oliver, want to have a child but IVF hasn’t worked and they need to look at other options. Everyone is distracted at the barbecue until … well, the reader doesn’t find out what happens until closer to the end of Truly, Madly, Guilty.
I have enjoyed a few Lianne Moriarty books and when I was looking for an audiobook, I saw Truly, Madly, Guilty was available. I’ve read The Husband’s Secret, What Alice Forgot and Nine Perfect Strangers. Her books all have deep characters and there is usually a twist or two, along with a few surprises.
In the aftermath of the barbecue, everyone is feeling responsible and guilty and dealing with it in different ways. Erika and Clementine have always been close friends, but Erika finds herself leaning on her husband more. Clementine’s marriage is falling apart. Vid and Tiffany’s daughter starts acting strangely. Then, the body of their neighbor is found – left alone for weeks in his house. How could they all have missed him being gone since he was always yelling at them?
If you enjoy a good fiction story that has characters that jump out and a little bit of suspense, you will enjoy Truly, Madly, Guilty. It is for adults since it deals with married couples talking about romance and one character used to be a stripper. I guessed a few parts of the book, but there were still many surprises.
