The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simson

The Rosie Effect

“My love for Rosie was so powerful that it had caused my brain to make a grammatical error.”

In The Rosie Effect, Don Tillman is married to Rosie, the woman he found while searching for a wife in The Rosie Project. They have moved from Australia to New York City to work and study at Columbia. He’s a professor and she’s a med student. Life can be hectic, but they start to find a routine just as the unexpected happens. Don is going to be a father. He now has to manage work, a move, supporting Rosie and having a friend move in with them, all on top of trying to show Rosie he can be a good father.

I really enjoyed The Rosie Project when I read it for a book club early last year. Don Tillman is an unforgettable character. The story is told from his eyes and he is most likely a highly functioning autistic geneticist. He is very logical, but manages to have a handful of friendships and truly cares for those people, and they for him. A friend was recently reading The Rosie Effect and it reminded me that I hadn’t finished the series, so I checked it out from my local library. The wait time was fairly short.

Rosie wants to show Don and the world that she is self-sufficient, even when it comes to raising their child. Don wants to be involved and in the midst of trying to learn about children, he finds himself in trouble with the police. He hides his troubles from Rosie to keep her stress levels down, but then they start drifting apart. It takes Don’s whole village of friends to help him and Rosie see what they all see – they belong together.

The Rosie Effect is a sweet story of love and friendship. I am hoping the next book, The Rosie Result, comes available soon so I can see how Don and Rosie deal with parenthood. Fans of A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Bachman will enjoy the Rosie series.
