“Good people can’t imagine evil. It catches us by surprise, and it always will.”
During his deployment to Afghanistan, Dr. Mike Scanlon receives the worst news he can imagine. His wife died in a household accident – cutting herself with a knife and bleeding to death because she passed out and couldn’t get help. He is given enough time to head home and bury her and arrange for someone to watch their baby girl, who was just a newborn when he left. His wife’s sister and her husband agree to watch the baby. However, as Mike digs deeper into his wife’s belongings, he starts to uncover things he didn’t know about her.
I’m trying to read more of the books I have in my house to make a dent in my to-read pile this year. When I saw Don’t Go in my pile, I looked to see if an audiobook was available to checkout from my library. I’ve read Betrayed by Lisa Scottoline that I didn’t enjoy because it had way too many things happening over a short period of time. I thought it was worth giving the author another chance.
While Mike is roped into a second tour of duty to help soldiers since they are low on medics, he finds out his wife was having an affair and pregnant at the time of her death. As soon as he gets back to the States, his new mission is to find his wife’s lover and try to get his daughter to warm up to him. Along the way, he has to deal with getting hooked on pain medicine and living with a disability. His world seems to need to unravel completely before he can put it back together.
There are a lot of twists and turns in Don’t Go, but it was a more believable storyline than the other Scottoline book I read. As a military brat and wife, I connected with the story of a soldier being on deployment and the hardships military families face. The book had me guessing to the very end, which makes for an interesting read.
