“Perhaps you already know that the secret to slowing down is simply realizing you woke up to a precious 24-hour gift that is only redeemable today and so you are going to savor it slowly.”
We are so busy. Every day. To-do lists, school activities, meals to cook, dishes to clean, laundry to put away. Motherhood can be exhausting, but it should be enjoyable as well. It should be savored. Children grow into adults in the blink of an eye. Shawn Fink, The Abundant Mama, kept all this in mind when writing her guide to Savoring Slow.
A friend of mine recently read this book and highly recommended it. It was for sale as an e-book on day, so I bought it and put it near the top of my to-read list. As a mother, I’m always looking for ways to help keep my life and priorities in focus.
The book starts out with the basic steps of first taking care of yourself and then getting your family on board with creating a slower lifestyle. Then the author goes through 12 habits that can help mothers and families create a slower, more enjoyable pace of life. Some of the habits are being okay with saying, “No,” plan for less activities in life, enjoy the quiet and saying, “Yes,” to the memorable moments. Shawn Fink shares her own tips and struggles with each habit she suggests. Her suggestions come without any guilt, but as a friend coming alongside you for the journey.
I would recommend this book to any mother or mother-to-be. It could be re-read many times as we often need to re-focus during the journey. Parenting is hard, but there is no rule about how much we should do – just that we should love the people given to us. This book would make a good book club book for a women’s group or a mom’s group study book.
