The Rhythm of Life by Matthew Kelly

Rhythm of Life

“If you don’t break from the tensions of daily living, they will break you.”

Wouldn’t we all like to enjoy every single day of life? Doing that means finding a good rhythm and knowing what our passions and priorities are for life. The Rhythm of Life tackles these topics in a way that is easy to ponder and relate to. Matthew Kelly shares his own story of facing the choice of a future people around him wanted or a future he felt a passion for following. However, even after choosing his passion, he had to learn that there is still a balance to be found in following a passion.

A friend recommended The Rhythm of Life to me when she heard I was reading religious books during Lent. I’ve read several Matthew Kelly books and have enjoyed them, like Resisting Happiness. They tend to be thought-provoking and cause me to pause and examine where I am in life.

Kelly’s passion was writing and speaking and opportunities opened up to him all over the place. However, by following every opportunity, he let himself get burned out and found himself having days where he didn’t have the energy to get out of bed. He realized that he needed to take care of himself emotionally, physically and spiritually in order to completely fulfill his passion for life. He shares his tips and reminds readers of what is most important in life – a relationship with God. Dreams and passions have to be balanced with living a life God calls each of us to daily.

I highly recommend The Rhythm of Life to anyone high school age or older either trying to figure out what to do with their lives or feeling like their lives are out of balance. The book could be read in a few sittings or slowly over time. It would be a good addition to a bookshelf as different seasons of life could use different parts of the book.
