Charleson, S.C., in the Spring

We chose to visit Charleston, S.C., for our other spring break trip because it was a new city to us and it had beaches. We flew out there on a Monday and back on a Thursday.

The flights to Charleston were smooth and we got in just as our rooms were ready for check in. We got settled and then headed out to downtown Charleston in our rental car. Parking is not easy in downtown Charleston, but we found a place eventually. We ate at late lunch at Poogan’s Smokehouse. It’s a delicious bbq restaurant!

We then found Rainbow Row and took in the historic homes painted vibrant colors. We found the Charleston City Market that’s several blocks long and did some shopping. Then, we headed to the Pineapple fountain, which had several kids playing in the water. It was a nice, warm day. We still had time, so we made a visit to Folly Beach, but the wind was making it feel really cold by the water. We found a pineapple dole whip stand nearby for a snack and then headed off to find a place for dinner. We ended up at Mellow Mushroom Pizza and really enjoyed it.

The next day was our beach day. We grabbed breakfast at the hotel, got ready, got some snack foods at the grocery store and headed to the beach. We first thought we’d go to Sullivan’s Island, but a quick search said there were no public restrooms there. We switched our plans and headed to Isle of Palms and went to the county beach. It had clean restrooms, a snack stand and a place to rent chairs and umbrellas. There was also a gas station and grocery store about a three-minute walk away if we needed anything. We spent several hours on the beach enjoying the sun and snacks. It was a very calm time. The beach also had changing stalls and when we were done, we got our clothes from the car and changed before heading to dinner.

We went to dinner at Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan Island. The good was good, but the atmosphere was so neat as they have Edgar Allen Poe’s writings and pictures all over the wall. He lived in Charleston for a time when he was in the Army. It’s where he met Annabelle Lee. We then headed to the beach for some pictures before heading back to the hotel for the night.

Our last day in Charleston was slowed down a bit by some sunburns, but some of us visited the USS Yorktown and others got to go on a downtown horse carriage history tour. Both stops were fascinating! We attempted to visit Fort Sumter but the ferries only went out three times a day and we had missed the first one.

(For Taylor Swift fans, there’s also a Taylor Swift-themed bookstore in Charleston – Sweeter than Fiction. We stopped in and it was very cute. It mainly has romance books, but there are stickers and cards, too.) Lunch that day was at Vicious Biscuit because you have to eat biscuits in the south. We ate dinner at a local Mexican restaurant.

Our travel day home was a bit long and there weren’t enough seats on one flight for all of us, so two of us had to wait an extra four hours for the next flight. We all got home that day, though.
