Rachel agrees to visit Singapore with her boyfriend Nick over the summer, expecting a nice vacation and a chance to meet his friends and family. They are both professors in New York and both Asian, but Rachel grew up in California and Nick grew up in Singapore. Their backgrounds don’t matter in America, but in Singapore, they mean everything because Nick is rich – crazy rich – and the wedding they plan to attend soon after arriving for Nick’s best friend is not just any wedding, but the society wedding of the year. Rachel is unprepared for what she encounters within hours of stepping off the plane.
I was looking for an audiobook to listen to and saw that Crazy Rich Asians was available. I have seen it around and know it’s been made into a movie, so I thought I’d give it a chance. I was hooked quickly. It reminded me of when I used to watch soap operas in high school and college.
As Rachel tries to befriend Nick’s friends and family, she quickly realizes she is seen as an outcast and gold-digger. Her relationship with Nick seems to be tested at every event as almost everyone only cares about money. A good family has lots and lots of money. Nick’s mom has Rachel investigated and what she discovers rocks Rachel’s world to the core and causes her to think if she could ever fit into Nick’s world.
Crazy Rich Asians was a wild ride of a story. It has very adult language all throughout it, but it was an interesting plot. Fans of drama and soap operas will really enjoy Crazy Rich Asians. I think I will be watching the movie soon.
