Dracula by Bram Stoker

Dracula

“How blessed are some people, whose lives have no fears, no dreads; to whom sleep is a blessing that comes nightly, and brings nothing but sweet dreams.”

Jonathan Harker is a good lawyer who is happily engaged to Mina. His work takes him to Transylvania where he is virtually imprisoned in Count Dracula’s castle as the count’s next target. He is able to fend off the count and after the count flees, eh is able to escape. His fiancé is called to the hospital to help him recover. Mina has just spent time with her friend Lucy who ends up perishing from wounds inflicted by the Count. Her knowledge of what the Count did to Lucy helps her piece together what happened to her husband.

My husband and I are reading through some classics together and decided to read Dracula in October. Neither of us had read it. We read about a chapter a day and then were able to discuss the book as we went along. We plan to watch a few movies now based on the book.

After realizing what the Count had done to her friend and finding out from Dr. Van Helsing that the Count is actually a vampire, Mina joins together with her husband and a few other men to try to rid the world of this evil. However, along the way, Mina herself becomes a target of the Count and puts all of their lives in danger.

Dracula is a fascinating story and is a classic good vs. evil book. The plot seems complex at times because of the high writing style and because the point of view changes several times within a chapter. It was very interesting, though, to see what the original vampire book was about.
