Go See the Principal by Gerry Brooks

Go See the Principal

“Never underestimate the power of an unsolicited candy bar or Starbucks drink.”

Gerry Brooks is an Internet sensation – in the education world. Many teachers, parents and administrators have come across his funny videos that often are very close to the truth about the world of education. There are videos about the pick up line, the school goody table and kindergarten lunch time. In a funny way he brings to light many issues that are actually serious in nature, too, such as testing, school supplies and creating a community. He uses the same humor in Go See the Principal, but the book allows him to go deeper into the topics.

I came across Gerry Brooks when some friends who are teachers reposted his videos on Facebook (the one with the Barbies at a meeting) and I was hooked. My children would often watch the videos together. The one about kindergarten lunch duty is one of our favorites. When I saw he had written a book, I put Go See the Principal on my to-read list right away. I actually bought the ebook when it was on sale one day.

Go See the Principal is a fairly quick read. The book is divided into nine parts that cover different aspects of school life – before school, in the classroom, eating times, specials, principal life and notes home. There are tips for both school staff and parents all throughout the book. I was reminded to make a point of supporting my children’s teachers at the same time I look out for my children’s best interests – like not bringing carrots to class parties because really, no kids want to eat that at a party.

I would highly recommend Go See the Principal to every school staff member and parent with a child in school. While you will laugh, you will also learn or be reminded of several key aspects of how we can all work together for the best interests of the children.
