“And that’s what it is like to be so very human — hurting but still hoping.”
We all have difficulties in our life and have experienced hard times. Yet, many times we feel alone in those times, wishing there were others who understood how we feel and how we’re questioning God. Finally, there is a book for these times. It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way is an honest look at how Lysa TerKeurst dealt with some of the hardest times a soul can face – her husband dealing with addictions and having an affair, a medical emergency, an empty nest and breast cancer. She asked God, “Why?” all throughout and found out it’s okay to ask Him that question.
I’ve read some of TerKeurst’s other books and found them encouraging. I’ve read Uninvited and The Best Yes. I heard about her new book on a Focus on the Family podcast and checked out the ebook from my local library.
Like a modern-day Job, TerKeurst faced not only her difficult times, but talk from both friends and strangers about what she should do and why all of it was happening to her. However, she turned to her true friends, a counselor and God to learn how to deal with life day by day. In 11 chapters, Terkeurst takes her readers through the lessons she’s learning in these times. Overall, the most important lessons are that God can take the broken and make something stronger and that He is ultimately allowing things to happen for our good. Holding on to these truths allows her to keep hope alive.
I highly recommend It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way for all adults who have faith. It will help you if you’re facing hard times. It will help you understand those in your life who are facing hard times and how to support them. It’s not a book that will solve problems, but it is a book that will give you the tools to deal with your current situation. The best part is that it will feel like you have a friend who truly understands.
“But I don’t want to tie this up in a bow because real life is never that tidy. I’m still a girl who cries over what’s happened, grieves what we can’t get back, and gets scared. So very scared.”
