NYC in Winter, Day 2 1

Our train ride in the second day was much smoother as it didn’t involve having to take a bus. Our first place to go that day was to see the Rockettes holiday spectacular. We walked through Times Square on our way to Radio City Music Hall and our children were mesmerized by the billboards and stores. We saw that there was a Carlo’s Bakery, but it wasn’t open yet.

Going into Radio City Music Hall was like stepping back in time. The seats and bathrooms are still styled as they were originally. Any updates have kept to the original design. The women’s bathroom also had a big powder room with mirrors. Every part of the Rockettes show was amazing and they told the nativity story towards the end of the show. One song was a sing-a-long so I can say I’ve sung in Radio City Music Hall.

We stopped in and looked around St. Patrick’s Cathedral and spent a few moments in prayer. Then we found a Just Salad place to eat lunch – counter seating again. After lunch, we went to Rockefeller Center to see the tree, get coffee and go ice skating. It is beautiful all decorated for the holidays. Ice skating conditions weren’t great (slightly warm weather, old hockey skates) and one of our children fell and hurt her arm. I stayed with her and we didn’t end up skating, but the others really enjoyed it.

After ice skating, we walked to Central Park and saw the Trump Tower and Plaza Hotel along the way. Our destination was to find the Balto statue. I really wanted to see it to complete our Iditarod experiences. We had been to the Iditarod start, the museum in Wasilla, Alaska, where the stuff Togo is and had seen stuffed Balto in Cleveland. I was able to explain to someone there why there was a statue of a dog in Central Park.

We ended the trip in Times Square by visiting M&M world, stopping by Krispy Kreme to get the Big Apple doughnut and eating dinner at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant – Fish and Chips. It was neat to see Times Square as it was just starting to get dark – music, purse sellers, night club ticket sellers, people in costumes. Our train was delayed, so we missed our connection and would have to wait 45 minutes for the next one. So, we just Lyfted from our connection back to the train station we started the day.

It was a whirlwind and unforgettable trip. We saw so many great sights and we felt safe the whole time we were there. (We avoided the subways on purpose.)
