“Live with a holy sense of urgency, as if today could be your last.”
A week hiking through the Himalayas was life-changing for David Platt. He saw things and met people and heard stories that would completely rock his faith. Invited by a friend who lives and works in the Himalayas, Platt packed a backpack with a week’s worth of supplies, said goodbye to his wife and children and flew by plane and helicopter to a remote area. He first discovers how poor the people are and how they make do with very little. He then learns how difficult it is to get medical care and many people die of cholera. But, the thing he learns that tears at his heart is the amount of young girls sold into sex slavery. He shares his trip in Something Needs to Change.
As part of the Multnomah and Waterbook launch team, I signed up to get an advanced copy of Something Needs to Change to help with its launch. I was given a free copy in exchange for a fair review. The synopsis seemed like it would be a compelling story.
I also read through Platt’s book, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith From the American Dream after reading Something Needs to Change. It’s a very challenging book about how Christians should truly be living out their faith. He provides a year-long challenge for Christians to pray for the world, read through the Bible and sacrifice time and money for others.
David Platt takes the reader on his journey showing every day what he encounters on his hike. Then, at the end of every day, he shares what is going on in his head and heart and shares from his journal. As a pastor, he lays his soul bare as he shares having a crisis of faith about the reality of hell and about deciding how he should serve God after what he’s seen. He shares honestly and then leaves it up to the reader to make his or her own personal decisions about what to do with his life after reading the book.
Something Needs to Change is a very challenging book for any person of faith. It encourages the reader to step outside his or her comfort zone and put faith into action. There is a world of suffering out there – even in our own backyards. What are we doing about it? How are we making things change? Something Needs to Change is available Sept. 17, 2019.
