The Chemist by Stephanie Meyer

The Chemist

“You’ll make mistakes because it’s impossible to know what is or isn’t a mistake until it’s made.”

Her real name is almost forgotten to her, but she is known as The Chemist. With no family left by the time she was in college, she was a target recruit of the government organization that needed a chemist who could do things most people only think about in nightmares. On the run for years after the same organization tried to assassinate her, she changes names and locations often, but stays on top of her chemistry – ways to make people tell the truth without leaving a mark on their bodies, at least on the outside. When a former coworker contacts her with the promise of being able to come out of hiding after completing one job, she finds herself persuaded, but she has to do the job on her own terms.

I have read The TwilightSeries by Stephanie Meyer years ago and have had The Chemist, a more recent book of hers, on my to-read list for a while. I recently had to paint our basement and downloaded this as an audiobook from my library through the Libby app. It held my interest with a great twist early on and it was a very unique plot.

The twist happens very early on in the book when The Chemist realizes the government agency has once again tried to get rid of her. The person she was supposed to interrogate for information on a deadly virus ends up being innocent. A unconventional romance begins while a plot for revenge is planned and executed. I was waiting for another twist to happen, but it never did. I did enjoy how the book ended, though.

The Chemist is a great read for people who enjoy thrillers. The plot is very plausible and the ending very satisfying. It has romance, government intrigue, violence and justice. It would be a good vacation or beach read.
