“And I’m not worried about it being haunted. I have my own ghosts. I carry them with me wherever I go.”
A wedding is about to take place on an island off the Irish coast. The bride, Jules, is a famous blogger and the groom, Will, is a famous TV actor. Together, they bring a cast of characters to the island for a wedding set amongst bogs where people have vanished. Everyone seems to have a secret – the best man, the bride’s sister, the bride’s best friend, and even the groom. He went to high school at an all-boys boarding school where they would play a “game” on people called Survivor. Taken in the middle of the night to an unknown location, they would leave a student to find his own way back. Now, Will uses that as a basis for his TV show – he’s dropped in the middle of nowhere and has to find his way out.
I picked The Guest List at random when I was looking for ebooks to check out from my library. The plot seemed really interesting and I thought a mystery/thriller would be fun to read during the fall time.
The Guest List goes back and forth between many different characters and switches from the present day, where someone has been murdered at the reception, to going back to the previous day, earlier that day or even further back in time. Each character reveals a bit more of his or her own secret that leads the reader to try and guess who has been murdered and who the murderer might be.
I had a pretty solid guess toward the end of the book and I was mostly right. I won’t give away the victim or the murderer, but it could be quite a surprise to most readers. I enjoyed reading The Guest List. It was a good reminder that secrets tend to find a way out in the end. It’s always better to just be honest.
