“Before she spoke he knew. And when she spoke, he carried the remembrance of her words in his heart always.”
Isaac is growing up in a traditional Amish community. He loves to play with his friends, enjoys school and tries to avoid chores. In The Little Amish Matchmaker, he sees his older brother acting funny around his teacher, Catherine, and gets it into his head that they would be a good couple. He tries to find opportunities for his brother to help the teacher, and while they start spending more time together, Isaac is frustrated that his brother won’t ask her for a date.
I usually read several holiday books in December to get into the Christmas spirit. I saw The Little Amish Matchmaker earlier this year at a book sale and grabbed it to read this year. It was a quick read, but very much full of the holiday spirit.
In The Little Amish Matchmaker, when the story isn’t about Isaac trying to match up his brother with his teacher, it explores Isaac’s life and how he helps prepare another classmate for the annual Christmas program. Ruthie stutters and in his quest to help her, he learns that she hasn’t had a good home life and needs friends to give her confidence. Isaac steps up and brings in others to help her out. The annual Christmas program brings a few surprises for all in Isaac’s life.
Fans of Amish fiction or holiday books will enjoy The Little Amish Matchmaker. Middle-schoolers could read it as the main character is a younger boy. While it is fairly predictable, it falls great into the holiday book genre as a feel-good read.
