The Main Dish by Victoria Kimble

The Main Dish

“And the worst part was, the door to the life I had always dreamed of was completely open, ready for me to walk through. Only now a herd of pint-sized chefs stood in my way.”

Scarlet is finishing up her sophomore year and just knows if she can get a violin chair for the Summerset Festival, her final two years of high school will be fantastic. She will finally be recognized not just for her talent, but as a “cool” orchestra kid. She does make it in the orchestra, but her dreams are torn from her as her sister also makes it in to her dream opportunity – on a baking show in L.A. Her parents decide her sister’s opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime shot and the whole family should go out to California for the summer.

The Main Dish will be released July 7, 2020. I received an advanced copy in exchange for a fair review. I’ve read The Choir Girls series by Kimble and both myself and my daughters have really enjoyed the books. They will be reading The Main Dish after me.

Just as Scarlet starts to make peace with her parents’ decision, the show starts up on TV and everyone at school wants to ask her about her sister. Then, she’s given second chair in the school orchestra. She starts to plot of a way to get her friends to talk to her about something other than her sister, but can she do it without revealing anything about the show’s ending? She has to try something.

The Main Dish is a great young adult novel about sisters and the desire to be popular. Family relationships can be tough and when sacrifices don’t seem fair, it can cause rifts. Parents aren’t always perfect and The Main Dish also examines how the parents present the situation to their daughters. I would highly recommend this book to any tween/teen who enjoys a story full of suspense and drama – especially if she has a sister!
