“Making a living is nothing if you’re not also making a life.”
Life is made up of decisions. Some may be easy, but for big decisions it can be hard to know if you’re making the right one. Emily P. Freeman has taken to heart the best advice for those decisions – do the next right thing. We don’t have to figure out our entire life path or even know if something will completely work out. We just need to look and see what the next right step should be.
I’ve read Grace for the Good Girl and Simply Tuesday by Emily P. Freeman and enjoyed both of them. When I heard she had another book out, The Next Right Thing, I wanted to read it. I also heard it mentioned on several podcasts. I waited a few weeks for it to become available as an ebook from my local library.
In each chapter of The Next Right Thing, Freeman shares a personal story to tie with that chapter’s message. She shares the struggles she had deciding what career path to follow and how she and her husband figured out how to move on to another job for him. Each chapter suggests a different way to deal with decision-making from not listening to critics, seeking advice from trusted sources, listing your priorities, finding time for your soul to be quiet and learn to say no. She also discusses how sometime life is the journey of making decisions, not the decision itself or its end goal. Her writing style is easy to read and feels like she’s having a conversation with you. Each chapter ends with a prayer and a call to action for the reader to put the idea into practice.
The Next Right Thing is a great companion to Don’t Overthink It by Anne Bogel. Freeman offers a Christian perspective on how to not overthink decisions. If you really struggle with decision-making, I would highly recommend reading both books! They would both be good for high school readers and older.
