The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton

The Secret Keeper

“There were moments in which a person reached a crossroads, when something happened, out of the blue, to change the course of life’s events.”

On the day Laurel planned to escape from her family to spend time with the boy she loved, making plans to run away to acting school, she witnesses a crime. It ends up being a family secret that she keeps until her mother is getting close to the end of her life. Realizing she doesn’t know her mother’s past much at all, she decides to see what she can find out about why the crime was committed. Digging into her mother’s past uncovers far more than she ever thought she’d find.

I am reading several books this year that I already have in the house to make a dent in my to-read pile. The Secret Keeper was picked up at a library book sale a few years ago. I finally got around to reading it on a lazy Sunday during the time of social distancing.

As Laurel is researching, the author tells her mother’s story, which is mostly set in London during WWII. Dorothy left her family to make her own way and live in the same city as the boy she loves. As she volunteers, she makes friends with a woman across the street, Vivien, and her life will never be the same. The story kept me guessing as it unraveled, but I didn’t see the ending coming.

Lovers of historical fiction and great fiction will love The Secret Keeper. I enjoyed the story and getting to know the characters. The plot has a lot of twists and turns and I stayed up late to finish the book so I would know how it ended!
