Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

Nine Perfect Strangers

“She must focus. Nine people were depending on her. Nine perfect strangers who would soon become like family.”

Masha is climbing the corporate ladder quickly until she is taken down by a heart attack and changes her life completely. Her health transformation is so drastic and powerful that it makes her want to inspire others to become their healthiest, best self. She opens a spa – The Tranquillum House – where she confiscates snacks, wine, cell phones and enforces a smoothie-based personalized diet, exercise program and a time of silence. When guests start not taking her seriously, she starts taking drastic measures to ensure they find personal enlightenment.

I’ve enjoyed a few Liane Moriarty books so far (What Alice Forgot and The Husband’s Secret), so when I saw she had a new book out, I put Nine Perfect Strangers on my to-read list. I started seeing some friends saying they enjoyed the book, so I put it on my holds list on Libby and waited a few weeks for the ebook to become available from my local library.

Frances is a twice-divorced romance writer who has just been turned down by her publisher for her latest book. She seeks to refocus her life at the 10-day cleanse at The Tranquillum Spa. There, she meets a former football player, a divorce lawyer, a couple on the brink of divorce, a recent divorcee and mother of three and a family who recently lost their son. They all begin the retreat with three days of silence and when they can start talking, they discover Masha is trying a new protocol on their group. I can’t tell more about what they experience without giving the book away, but it was an interesting book full of plot twists.

Nine Perfect Strangers is a fun thriller due to the plot twists. I enjoyed that the book took turns telling the story through different characters’ perspectives, letting the reader know more details about each person’s life. The book is for adult readers as it addresses suicide, divorce and death.
